What’s New?

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Hi!  What’s new?

I feel as though my poor website has taken a back seat of late and I have not gotten to interact with you all here much.  I did not mean to show up here so infrequently!  Here are some highlights from my past few weeks!

I attended a Beth Moore event with my Mom-in-law, Karen, which was wonderful.  One of the absolute highlights of the weekend was this cat painted on the parking garage near Pershing Auditorium in downtown Lincoln:

My girls attended Camp Kindness at Nebraska Humane Society, which was, as always, awesome.

While we were there, we accidently met a baby Chinese Crested puppy and her two equally adorable brothers.  She was throwing toys at her brothers’ heads and dancing around in a happy I-am-just-the-greatest dance.  Her mini dress says “Major Attitude.”  My friend called this the Princess and the Pea picture.  :)  That is her equally cute, more furry brother to the left of her.  HE has been adopted.  I do not know if she or her other brother or their Mama have yet.

Must. Resist. Puppy.

The awesome Jana Rade of Dawg Business published this post I wrote on xylitol toxicity:

Xylitol and the Basset Hound

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener present in many products, most notably some sugar-free gums.  After the scare with this poor dog, we do not even allow xylitol into our house anymore!

Veterinary Economics published my story about Joy the Puppy missing her Ebony Dog, which is neat to see in print, but brings up all of my (still pretty raw) sadness over Eb.

Do Pets Mourn?

Joy’s eyes are still intermittantly baldy-bald, and we are still all moping around, but we are doing ok!

Next month, Veterinary Economics is publishing my post on how to make a Veterinary Pen Holder!

That will be lighter, and a fun article.  Pretty silly!

Tomorrow, I am speaking at the Nebraska Humane Society Cat Expo at noon.  When I do public speaking, I tend to drool and stammer and mumble and talk so fast I am done in ten seconds instead of one hour and trip over my own feet standing still (or at least I feel like I do).  So that should be fun for everyone.

Nebraska Humane Society Cat Expo

If you are in Omaha, come if you can!  A cat behaviorist, Kitty Dybdall,  is speaking at 10 am, which I am very excited about, and a CAT AGILITY TRAINER, Jill Archibald, is doing demonstrations!  I am SO excited to see that!

Hope you are having a wonderful summer!

CareFRESH Blog!

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

I am SO excited about my newest writing project!  I have been working with CareFRESH for a little over a year, and the team decided to start a blog on the website.  I love it!

Lavender CareFRESH bedding complimented Fuzzy and Wuzzy’s gorgeous skin the best of all the colors…

With this project, I will be less able to just go with my random kicks, and need to focus on themes and schedules and such much more than I do here on Riley and James, which, honestly, will be very good for me!

I am fairly disciplined, but (I have only ever told Russ this, and just very recently…) a large part of my discipline is extrinsic.  For example, I love having a made bed every morning, but if FLYLady did not tell me to make my bed, I probably would not!  I love being a veterinarian, but if I had not had the structure of veterinary school, I would not have learned all that I have.

And I love writing about environmental enrichment of <hamsters>, but if I were not led to write about it, I probably would not!

I will write somewhat shorter posts than what I normally write here, focus on small pets – rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, rabbits and ferrets – and send the team every single picture I have of Fuzzy, Wuzzy, Princess and Piggy!  Feel free to send cute pictures of your Warm Fuzzies too!

Wuzzy in her Classroom in a Box

I will let you know where on the CareFRESH website the blog is as soon as I know.  It will probably attract a similar crowd to the Ask-a-Vet part of the CareFRESH website (kids and adults who are in love with small pets – two of my very favorite subsets of humanity!)  It will be an interactive blog, which will be very fun.  I hope you will come join me as often as you can!

For now, will you help me come up with topics? Do you have questions that would be best answered in a longer post than the Q & A of Ask-a-Vet?  Are there things about your own favorite small pet species that you think everyone should know, but may not yet?  THIS is going to be fun, people! :)

Houdini Was…

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

In the midst of reading the 25 leadership books recommended by Veterinary Economics, I snuck in this super awesome book that I HAVE to tell you about because I LOVE it.

Houdini Was…

Written and illustrated

the Second Grade Students of White Bluffs Elementary in Richland, Washington

I bought the book because of the very cute hamster on the cover.  (I judge books by their cover, which you should not do, and though I can usually tell at first glance whether I will like a book or not, my reasoning is not always quite…linear.)

This book covers in impressive depth the human-animal bond, pet loss, processing grief, the value of pets, lessons to be learned from our relationships with our pets and even the value a classroom pet adds to the educational experience*.  What impresses me is that all of this is done so poinently and concisely…by second graders…mostly by crayon.  I love the pictures.  I love the humor.  I love seeing Houdini hamster through the eyes of those who knew and loved her.  It almost makes me want to treat my Fuzzy-loss with a hamster…

…but I won’t.

Houdini Was…

Five Stars!

This book won the 2010 Scholastic “Kids Are Authors” contest and is available at all the Scholastic Book Fairs going on now!  I got it tonight during Parent-Teacher conferences :)

What I am Doing This Week, Posting Fun Links – Artists for Hope, Generation Vet…

Monday, September 20th, 2010

I thought it would be fun to post links to some fun pet (and not pet) related things I have been reading or working on lately.  Check out as many as you have time for.  Add your own favorites in the comment section if you would like.   My Favorite Things seem very random when I write them out like this, but they make sense in my head!

♪♫ ♪♫ ♪♫ These are a few of my favorite things ♪♫ ♪♫ ♪♫

Artists for Hope You may remember me talking about this wonderful group here and in the Wuzzy Chronicles.  They just returned from another trip to Cazale, Haiti to visit the children and staff of The Real Hope for Haiti Rescue Center, and to continue their work with local Haitian artists.

Thank you Artists for Hope for the kind mention on your website! A veterinary blog and an artist/children’s welfare blog may seem like an odd combination, but in Real Life, it is a very natural fit!

Generation Vet has a thirteenth episode out.  I am still not over the fun of a veterinary comic strip.  It may seem strange to be such good friends with an imaginary veterinarian, but I LOVE Dr. Amanda Brown!

My Cat – My article on about Max the Cat is up.  He is THE best cat in the world.  If you and I are “real life” friends, you have probably met him, but if you have not, meet him here.

Next up on will be an article about dealing with pet loss.  As you know, I prefer writing about happy topics, but covering this subject is long overdue for me.  I think I have done it in a way that will be more helpful than depressing.  You will have to let me know when it comes out in a week or two.  Thank you Mom-Karen for the gentle nudging to address pet loss and grief.

Writing! I am LOVING working with Carefresh!  Still hoping to work with  My Favorite Dog and Cat Pet Food Company in the World and dvm360 (Here’s my Look At Me! blog post about twitter for veterinarians.  May be helpful for non-vets too.)

Being a Vet – I spent all last week at work (usually I work one day a week) and just loved it.  Wonderful staff, wonderful clients, wonderful patients.  This week I am back on Mom Duty (Haha, get it?  We are never off Mom Duty!) and have more time for writing.  And time for feeding Fuzzy Rat, who is still having vestibular (balance) issues.  I appreciate my pets providing me an endless supply of blogging material, but really, boring would be just fine!

Petchat and Dogtalk – One last fun link, in case you read this today…petchat and dogtalk are both tonight.  If you read this LATER than today, they are every Monday night!  Very fun, and I learn so much from other pet lovers.  They are both worth checking out!

My Small Tipsy Rat – I am going to go mix up some Critical Care and peanut butter, and spend some quality time with Fuzzy Rat.  Have a great week!

What I am Doing This Week: Waiting

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

I am waiting to see what three of my favorite companies have in mind for future projects.  I am hoping for a lifetime partnership of regular writing assignments, with cute pictures of my pets scattered throughout the publications.

That reminds me of one of my favorite lines in August Rush.  Evan’s friend asks him “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” and Evan replies, “No, I’m thinking something else.” Perhaps they are thinking something else.  Who knows?  It could be even better than what I am thinking.  Though, as you know, there is nothing better than cute pictures of my pets.

I am waiting to read another leadership book that I can add to the “What I am Reading” series here.  As you know, I will only review books to which I can give five stars.  So I am getting through the list, but not falling in love with the books.  Seriously, it seems as if the books were all chosen by men!  (They were…not that there’s anything wrong with that.)  Let’s skip the sports and war illustrations guys!  Then we can whip through these life lessons a little faster.

I am waiting to see how my fall work schedule pans out.  I struggle with the same pull with which every mother struggles.

Should I stay home more?  Should I work more?

However, a normal mother makes the very difficult decision that balances her life and family dynamics best, and then adjusts her schedule based on the changing circumstances of her family.  I do that and then obsess.  And second guess.  For a decade.  Literally.  Still, I am blessed to have the choice over which to obsess and second guess. Lately I have become a tiny bit better at enjoying the ride.  See?  I named this post “Waiting.”  Not “Fretting.”  Or “Obsessing.”  Or “Flip-flopping.”  Yay, me.  I’m progressing slowly, but I am progressing.

That reminds me of one of my favorite Bible verses:

“Wait for the Lord; Be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14 (NIV)

I am waiting for the smell of my perm to dissipate.

I am waiting for my kids’ friend to wake up from her nap so they can all play together.

I am waiting to see how well the Heartworm Disease and Omaha Pets article does on  Is everyone sick of discussing heartworm, or is it still an attractive topic in its (unfortunate) timelessness?  Maybe I just needed to write it to remind myself to continue to be a strong advocate for my patients’ health.

I am waiting to see how some important things turn out.  Russ, you always proof-read my rough drafts for me.  Thank you for that.  And I don’t write rough drafts of my posts on this website.  I just write what I am thinking.  Since the rough draft step gets skipped here, you may never see this.  If you do, remember that I love you more than writing.  I love you more than being a veterinarian.  I love you more than my (un)naturally curly hair.

Now I am waiting to hear back from only TWO of my favorite companies!  While I was writing this, I received an email from Nina Silberstein, the editor of The Wagging Tail Blog.  She said that she forgot to tell me that the post she had asked me to write a while back is due TOMORROW.

Sometimes it’s good to wait patiently, and sometimes it’s good to get busy.  The genius is in knowing when to do what. I am going to go start on this Wagging Tail Blog post

Have a great week.

I love you more than chocolate.

What I am Doing This Week: Dreaming

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

I just wrote a blog post for dvm360 at the invitation of Veterinary Economics Editor Kristi Reimer.  Ok, so it was not a direct invitation, it was the introduction to the June issue of Veterinary Economics, sort of a “Draw This Turtle” for veterinarians.

I opened my June Veterinary Economics and read it from cover to cover like I always do.  The last thing I read (It was on the front page – I read magazines and journals from back to front – I think it’s a lefty thing) made me space off and dream for the rest of my lunch break.  Kristi said (to me!) “We’re on the lookout for user-generated content.”

Earlier in the year, Charity, who I work for at Carefresh, suggested I write a list of every company I would like to write with.  I already have my dream Mom-Veterinarian-Writer career.  Really, could it get any better??

I write HERE (which I LOVE – thanks Dave!!) and for (which I also love – thanks Jordy and Morgan!), Banfield occasionally asks for my input for their blog and journal (Thanks Nina!) and I had just accidently landed my dream job with Carefresh (Thanks Charity and Tom!)  Was it even OK to dream bigger?

But I do everything Charity tells me to do.  So I started writing out my dream list.  And at the very top of my list was dvm360-Advanstar Communications.  They are the team behind most of my favorite veterinary journals.  I knew it was just a dream, but sometimes dreams can become Real Life.  And writing lists is fun.

Thank YOU for coming with me on this crazy (good-crazy) adventure.  It has been fun, hasn’t it? : )And look, they let me post this…

Twitter for Veterinarians

It had to be said – When the world of veterinary medicine (eighty thousand+ veterinarians) intersects with the world of twitter (six million+ tweeters), it is such an amazing thing.  It just is SO uncommon!  (Four hundred sixty-two veterinarians/hospitals on twitter by my count)  I wanted to make jumping into twitter easier for vets.  So I hope it does.  If you don’t see more veterinarians posting on twitter in the next month or so, assume they are, as always, busy preserving and saving lives, not that they are unable to figure out twitter, because now I hope they will be!

My Most Exciting News of the Spring! Partnering with Carefresh

Friday, April 30th, 2010

I am starting a writing assignment with Carefresh.  If you know me, you know I am rodent-obsessed and I LOVE Carefresh bedding!

I don’t know how to compare this to what normal people would get excited about…if you have analogies, let me know!  Amanda meeting Miley Cyrus…on a horse?  Abby getting a pet monkey?  Russ meeting Bob the Builder?  (Just kidding, Russ…sort of.)

I will keep you updated!  I am so excited!

(That’s my Baby Wuzzy Rat two years ago.  Could she BE any cuter??)

May 4, 2010

My first assignment with CareFresh Complete is to give away a ton of pet food. Really. A literal ton. I love this job! : )

If you are with a Small Mammal Rescue Group, I will have a CASE of food sent to you!

If you have your own…

♥rabbit♥guinea pig♥chinchilla♥rat♥mouse♥gerbil♥hamster♥

let me know which and I will send you a voucher for a free 2# bag of Carefresh Complete food!

Woo!  Fun!  But I don’t know one thousand people, so tell your friends too.

I may not be discriminating, but I do have excellent taste!

This is by no means an all-inclusive list of all of the wonderful people I know on twitter.

Here is the shortened link to this page:

The entire list is posted on twitter.

          Have a wonderful week!

          January 23, 2010

When I started writing this newsletter about twitter, I asked Russ, “How do I make sure that I don’t sound like a fourteen year old kid with too much time on her hands?”

I was still a bit wrapped up in the stereotypes about twitter.  Truth be told, I have completely fallen in love with the communication medium that is twitter.  I started tweeting in May 2009 at the recommendation of one of my two awesome brothers, and once I got my feet under me, really started enjoying it.

I have met veterinarians across the country and around the world.  I have met friends I may never have otherwise.  I have gathered a group of pet experts in one list and sometimes just watch them converse when I need to learn more about behavior and pets.  And if I have a question, everyone gathers to help me find the answer.  I LOVE twitter.  The only thing I love more than twitter is the great group of people I have met there.

I wanted a place to gather some of my favorite tweeters, so that when “Follow Friday” comes around, I am not overwhelming friends who don’t need their twitter stream taken over by the incredible list of awesome people I would recommend following.

If you have not yet been snagged by twitter, I hope you stick around the Riley and James Website for the actual pet information.  (“She’s strange, but she does have some good guinea pig information, I guess.”)  And if you, like me, have found twitter to be fun, informative, and a valid way to communicate with friends new and old, stop back by this post this coming Friday and every Friday.  You will love these guys.
