Pawcurious Blogathon 2011 is This Week!

Monday, November 7th, 2011

The third annual Pawcurious Blogathon starts this coming Saturday at 1:00 pm Central Time!

Recently Rescued Pups at Nebraska Humane Society

What is Blogathon?

Blogathon is a very fun online fundraiser for animals. It was started in 2009 when Dr. V decided, sort of on the spur of the moment, to spend twenty-four hours in a row blogging hourly to raise money for her local humane society.

In 2010, eight other bloggers joined Dr. V to raise money for different pet causes.  Four of us raised money for a seizure support dog for a four year old named Bradyn.  (He is getting his dog in March 2012 – woo!)

This year, the project has gotten so crazy that I do not even know how many animal lovers are participating yet!  How cool is that??

Elizabeth Hilpipre and I, along with at least six other Omaha bloggers, are raising money for the Nebraska Humane Society.  Also, an anonymous donor is matching every single donation to the Nebraska Humane Society during the Blogathon!  (Thank you Secret Pet Saver!!!)

Here is a running list of participants…Let me know of any I should add!

When is Blogathon?

1:00 pm Saturday, November 12. 2011 – noon Sunday, November 13. 2011 Central Time.

Can I participate?

Yes, of course!

How?

  • If you have a blog, and an animal related cause you would like to support, join us on Saturday and Sunday to blog hourly to raise money for your chosen cause. Feel free to blog more or less often, or participate in the “sane” hours of the Blogathon.
  • If you have a blog and would like to support a cause already being sponsored, check the list of participants and jump in with the project you would like to support!  Last year, I was still figuring all of this out, and loved Dr. V’s idea of helping a little boy get his therapy dog, so this is the option I chose.
  • Let us know you are participating!

Do I Have Time to Prepare if this is the First I Have Heard of Blogathon?

Last year I bought some Diet Coke and chocolate right before Blogathon started and made stuff up as I went.  So, yes.

What Should I Blog About?

The cause you are supporting…pets…your thoughts on things you think…videos…photos…links to the cause you are supporting or other Blogathon participants’ websites and the causes they are supporting or other stuff…

My blogging style is a bit random, so I made sure to link to the donation site at the end of every post last year to help focus myself.  I will be doing that again this year!

Do You Have Links From Last Year I Can Check Out?

Yes, and if you follow those links, they will bring you to more information!

Blogathon 2010 on Pawcurious

Blogathon 2010 on Riley and James

Oh no, I do not have a blog!  Do I need to sit on the curb and watch everyone go by?  *sniff*

No, of course not!

  • Offer to write a guest blog post in advance for any participating blogger you think may need a 3 am coffee break.
  • Comment on the participating blogs.  You would not believe how encouraging support and participation are when bloggers are thinking “What was I thinking?” and “What did I get myself into?” and “I am so tired!” and “Is this making a difference?”
  • See if bloggers need pictures that you have taken.  We are ALWAYS looking for great pictures, and they make posts more fun to read.  Also, your pets are super cute.
  • I am specifically looking for pictures of clocks “on the hour” to post each hour, so if you take a neat clock picture that I can use, let me know!

You are crazy!  I am not staying up all night!

That is not a question!  But you do have a good point.  You can still help!

  • Promote the Blogathon through facebook and twitter and other social media sites.
  • Tell your friends and family.
  • Support the cause or causes that you love.  Make donations during the Blogathon or even later in honor of “The Pawcurious Blogathon.”
  • Learn about the groups highlighted during Blogathon that sound interesting.
  • Get to know the participating bloggers.  Odds are, they are just as dog crazy as you are and would be very fun to know!
  • Do the awesome things you are already doing to help organizations helping animals…give, volunteer, support.

I think you are awesome, and I can not wait to spend this coming weekend with you!  THIS is going to be fun, people!

Paws for Japan

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Dr. V has a Brody Signal – it is a picture of her super cute pup that she puts over a flashlight and shines into the night.  Other pet lovers the world over see the signal, get the message and join her in her mission to make the world a better place.*

Today’s Mission:

“A Virtual Fundraiser to Aid Animal Relief Efforts via World Vets”

I do not think we even know how bad this tsunami and earthquake disaster in Japan is yet.  Not everyone is found.  The nuclear scare is not over.  I cling to stories of individuals because the big picture is just too much.  Everyone seems to be two degrees from loved ones in Japan.  Or one.  Or zero.  World Vets is in Japan, helping with relief efforts.

Sometimes people rescuers need to focus on finding and rescuing people and need pet rescuers to come along side of them to rescue the pets.

Sometimes pet owners need to know they are loved, and we understand how awful it is to be be seperated from and even lose loved ones.

Sometimes communities need to know that we care and that we long for a concrete way to show that and that we would do anything to make the situation better, even though we cannot fix it.

Sometimes people cannot take in the horror of an entire country in pain and need to hear one encouraging account of a rescue…a reuniting…a hopeless situation that ended happily.

*Dr. V does not have a Brody Signal.  *sigh*  I wish she did.  But her super awesome blog Pawcurious works just fine when pet lovers need to be gathered for a common goal.  I think she should do both.

Saturday Blog Hop

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

Happy Weekend All!  I have been watching Two Little Cavaliers and their friends do the Saturday Blog Hop for a while and have been trying to figure it out.  I joined Dr. V’s Blog Hop when she suggested we all post our favorite blog posts of 2010, and that was fun.

The Saturday Blog Hop looks like a wonderful way to meet other pet lovers.  I thought I had met all of the Pet-Loving Awesomes out there, but apparently I have not yet found The End of The Internet.

So if you are visiting Riley and James from the Saturday Blog Hop, thank you for stopping by!  Nice to meet you!  And if you are already a friend of Riley and James, thank you too.  I think you are all great.

My favorite posts often contain pictures of Pets Being Cute, so I thought that would be a fun theme for today.  Here are the Finch pets…

Ebony Dog and Max the Cat

Noodle the Poodle

Joy the Puppy

Piggy the Guinea Pig

Long Live Your Pet

Princess the Gerbil

Fuzzy and Wuzzy Rats

OK, so Fuzzy and Wuzzy are not part of our current herd, but they JUST passed away, and I am not ready to take them out of the lineup yet.  That’s Wuzzy in the background and Fuzzy in the foreground, from July 2010.  Weren’t they gorgeous??  And so sweet too.  They are Hairless Dumbo Rex rats.

Nice to meet you all!  I will spend THIS week coming to see your pet blogs!

Happy New Year!

A Puppy for Bradyn ♥

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who participated in Blogathon 2010 this past weekend!  You are awesome!

Bradyn is a four-year-old boy with epilepsy.  His Mom, Elizabeth, is raising money for 4 Paws for Ability so Bradyn can have a service dog.  Donations for the training of Bradyn’s service dog are being accepted until the end of the year!  So if the day was as much a blur for you as it was for me, or if it went right by you entirely, take heart!  You have not missed a thing!

Dr. V at Pawcurious headed a huge fundraiser over this past weekend (Blogathon 2010) in which we all posted one blog an hour for twenty-four hours to raise money for Braydn’s puppy (half of us) as well as other awesome charities and causes (the other half!)

If you would like to donate for Braydn, click HERE. That will take you to the first Blogathon post on Pawcurious where you can donate directly through “Chip In” (which works with PayPal) or directly to 4 Paws for Ability.

After that, check out all of the great Blogathon posts from this past weekend.  Donating will take a second.  Reading through all the great material is gonna take you months!

(YAY!  I got the turtle painting painted and auctioned by BZTAT!)

THANK YOU!

In honor of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, here’s a quick, off the top of my head…

Let Blogathon 2010 Begin!

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Dr. V, who has one of my FAVORITE veterinary websites ever (Pawcurious, of course!), invited other bloggers to join her on her second annual Blogathon.  So several other highly-caffinated pet lovers and I will be blogging once an hour for the next twenty-four hours in order to raise money to train a service dog for Bradyn.  Read more about Bradyn on his Mom’s website here. You know how random I can be, so when I spin completely off topic in this next twenty-four hours, remember that the purpose of this Blogathon is to raise money to train a service dog for Bradyn!

So please donate, tell your friends, follow along and comment on all the participating blogs, write a guest post so we can go grab another coffee…whatever you would like to do to participate!

Thank you to Omaha.net for spreading the word!

Music on Riley and James for the next twenty-four hours is provided by the awesome Omaha band, Adelaide.  All of the songs are from their YET-TO-BE-RELEASED album, Find Me Love.  When Adam Trabold and I were planning this he said, “You don’t need us to perform live do you?”  Ha!  Hey Adam!  Russ and I figured out how to get recordings to play on the site!  You are welcome! :)

Donations in Memory or Honor of Pets

If you would like to make a donation in memory or honor of a special pet, please tell me in the comment section of any of these posts or e-mail me at finch@rileyandjames.com.  Send me a paragraph or a page about your pet (It’s not like I will run out of paper!) and a picture of him or her.  When you do, I will feature them in a post within the next couple hours.

(Bradyn’s donation website is completely seperate from this one, so your memorial won’t be automatically linked to your donation and I will not have any way to know who donated what unless you tell me!  So please tell me if you have donated in honor or memory of a pet!)

Our Fuzzy Rat recently passed away.  She was an amazing little creature and best friend to Wuzzy Rat.  She made many friends at camps, schools, churches and daycares, and among all our friends and family, many of whom STOPPED saying “I’m just not a rat person.”  We love you Fuzzy Rat.  We miss you very much.  We have made a donation in honor of you…I think you would have liked that.

Please excuse the close up if you are not (yet) a rat person!  And to everyone else…Wasn’t she gorgeous??

Clicking here will bring you to the webpage with information about Bradyn and an opportunity to donate towards the training of his service dog from 4 Paws for Ability. ♥

Blogathon 2010

Monday, October 18th, 2010

As you know, this is how I often process things… :|

Sometimes I even forget to tell Russ what I am mulling over.  So he was not hearing me in context, but neither was he surprised, when yesterday, after Pastor Scott’s sermon on giving, I turned to him and said, “Pastor Scott is right.  I should blog with Dr. V in November, shouldn’t I?”  It only took him three or four eye blinks to realize that several weeks’ worth of prelude to that conversation had all been in my head, before he said, “Yes, of course you should!”

On the way home from church he said, “Now what were you saying?  And what did I miss?”  So I backed up and started over, this time outloud…

Last year, before I had even heard of Dr. V, she was busy spending an entire day blogging hourly to raise money for her local SPCA.

In the time since, I have enjoyed hearing bits and pieces of that crazy blog-an-hour day.  “Woo!”  I thought, “I remember when I was in junior high and could stay up all night!  No way I could do it now.”

Then I read that she was going to do it again!  “How fun!  I will read her daytime posts and the rest of them when it is all said and done,” I thought.  Of course, a small squish of my brain was hoping it could talk me into doing the Blogathon too.  Dr. V did say she would like some company…When I got home yesterday, I hurried to the computer to tell Dr. V I would blog with her, before I could remind myself what a crazy idea it is and how great I don’t do with sleep deprivation.  Now that I am committed, I am so excited and I cannot wait!

Even better, it is for a GREAT cause.  All of the money raised will go towards training a service dog for Bradyn, a four-year-old with epilepsy.

Feel free to donate before November 13, and be sure to check in with Dr. V and BZTAT (and their partnering Paint-a-thon) on November 13.  You could even blog with us! Or, if you are sane, you could say…”Woo!  I remember when I was in junior high and could stay up all night!  No way I could do it now.  I will read their daytime posts and the rest of them when it is all said and done.”  Careful, though.  I have been talking with Pastor Scott and a small squish of your brain about Blogathon 2011.

What I am Doing This Week: Gathering! Restating! Linking! Helping! Publishing!

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

(If you don’t mind, imagine the next sentence fragments in the voice of Flint Lockwood, from Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.  You know I LOVE to be boring, but sometimes I love to SEEM exciting, so I thought maybe that would help.   Thanks.)

Gathering!  Restating!  Linking!  Helping!  <running around the living room> <pushing big red button>  Publishing!

I know it’s been said, but I just wanted to make sure you and your pets have all the resources you need for this Independence Day!  So this week I am gathering and reposting information about storm and firework phobias.  Add any tips or resources you have!

Scared on the Fourth of July – Last Year’s Posting With an Update

Thunderphobia – Trainer Eric Goebelbecker’s Great Posting on Dr. V’s Pawcurious Website

Fourth of July Fireworks Safety Tips for Your Pets – brand new article from Dr. Patrick Mahaney, Veterinarian and Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist

Thundershirts! – Too late to order them from the website for Sunday!  And as you know, yahoos in Omaha are already shooting off fireworks, so the poor dogs are already pretty worked up.

Nebraska Humane Society has some Thundershirts, but they are running low!  Quick, go push someone out of the way and grab theirs.  (Don’t really.)

Happy Independence Day! Make sure your pet is with you or safe at home this weekend.  Here’s to a safe and wonderful weekend for you and your family!  God Bless America!

What I am Doing This Week: Celebrating My Birthday!

Saturday, February 6th, 2010
This week, I am writing Part 2 of “My Rat, Wuzzy” for Omaha.net.  I also celebrated my birthday!

Here is the great cake Abby Vadnais made for Rhonda Eckermann and me last year.  The one my daughter is making me today will be equally awesome, I am sure.  But I just like this picture because it is a fun memory of a good day with my former co-workers.  I went in to see them this year on my and Rhonda’s birthday, and I was so glad I did.  I miss you guys!  Good to see you!

Happy Birthday Rhonda!!
And from the rest of this post, you will know that I am also taking more breaks than perhaps I should.  But I don’t want you to miss these great links!  Enjoy!

Today, these are my three favorite creative representations of
The Noble Profession of Veterinary Medicine:

Barbie Vet – The rest of Pawcurious is also an awesome website!
Dr. V is very nice and has good information in with her stories.

And yesterday’s very fun find…Dr. Israeli’s veterinary comic strip

I promise there will be more information soon relevant to the care of our pets!  What has been on my mind most lately is vaccinations and pet food.  Stick around.  I will get out of Birthday Mode and into Serious Veterinarian Mode…but maybe not today!

February 9, 2010

Part 2 of Wuzzy’s story is published at Omaha.net!

And I wrote a guest post on Mary Haight’s website, Dancing Dog Blog about Debarking!
